The Arkansas State University System offers employees the option to purchase Short-Term Disability (STD) insurance through UNUM. This coverage provides income replacement if you are unable to work due to a qualified illness or accident — helping you focus on recovery without the added stress of lost wages.
Plan Overview
- Provider: UNUM (effective January 1, 2017)
- Employee-Paid Benefit: Employees pay 100% of the premium
- Coverage: Provides partial income replacement for up to 26 weeks if you become disabled and meet plan requirements
- Pre-existing Condition Period: 12 months
Available Plans

Both plans replace a portion of your income while you recover from a qualifying medical condition.
Rates and Coverage Amounts
- You may purchase coverage for up to 66 ⅔% of your weekly salary
- Premiums are age-based and increase at ages 30, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 65
- Actual cost depends on your age and coverage amount
Enrollment Information
- New employees may enroll within 31 days of hire
- Current employees may apply or make changes during Open Enrollment each year
